Design for Instruction Edits

This paper is one that I edited as part of my job as a writing fellow. I routinely met with students and edited their student teaching portfolios. This particular paper was written by a student that seldom met with me and so I tried to provide explanations in my comments and teach simple grammar principles. I had been given sample portfolios to compare with and read through them so that I could note areas that needed to be lengthened or changed to conform to the examples.

Paper I Edited for a Friend

This is one of many papers that I edited for a friend. When editing for friends, especially, I try to explain in the comments my reasoning behind the edits I suggest as well as any underlying grammar principles. Editing for friends has provided me with an interesting scenario in which I have to walk the line between providing too many edits and not enough to really make the paper better. On top of that, because many of these papers will be turned in for a grade, I try to make my edits full of teaching moments. Editing for friends also opens up a dialogue with the author, which I thoroughly enjoy.

Chapter I Edited for a Book on the Beatitudes

This article was to be a chapter in a book on the beatitudes that I edited for a religion professor at BYU. She had made a audio file of all her notes and the stories she wanted to include, which I transcribed and edited. The article was then over 20 pages long and she wanted it down to 10-15 pages. In the first round of edits I took it down to 16, and then in the second round of edits (those included in this file) I took it down to 13 pages. I also added all the headings and organized the material accordingly to match the style of the other chapters. Likewise, I organized the final material into more cohesive steps to conform to the style of the other chapters. Included in this file are the clean document after my first round of edits, my edits for the second round, and the final version of the chapter.

Edited Transcription of a Personal History

The following document is my edited transcription of the wife of a World War Two veteran reminiscing on her early years of courtship and marriage. I recognize that this piece, coming from a spoken medium, required much more edits than are usually necessary. It highlights my attention to detail and also my ability to standardize a particular voice and style, making it an easier read while not entirely jeopardizing its unique voice. The attached document includes the original file with track changes, followed by a document with the changes incorporated, and then a final draft with some additional edits.

Blog

I started my blog, Candidly, Cookie, my freshman year of college to chronicle the quotidian moments of life and practice a new kind of writing style.
